Choosing Tours and Guides in Egypt

A guide or operator can make a trip easier, but you still need to confirm licensing, inclusions, exclusions, pickup, safety, cancellation, and complaint evidence in writing.

When useful

Use help where complexity is real

  • A licensed guide is useful for dense historical sites, religious/cultural context, children or slower pacing, language support, and places where pickup or ticket sequencing is confusing.
  • An operator is useful for boats, diving, desert, protected areas, balloons, long road transfers, or activities needing credentials and weather decisions.
  • Independent travel may be fine for simple museum or city days if transport, tickets, and safety context are clear.

Licence check

Licence is a starting check, not an endorsement

  • Use the ETAA Travel Agents Directory as a current company licence-check source where relevant.
  • Directory inclusion does not prove Mersavia endorsement, quality, availability, suitability, insurance, safety, or good service.
  • For individual tourist guides, ask for current Egyptian guide licence evidence and verify through the responsible licensing/syndicate route where available before relying on it.

In writing

Confirm inclusions and exclusions

  • Confirm language, route, start/end time, pickup point, vehicle, tickets, meals, special tickets, accessibility needs, child needs, weather plan, cancellation, payment timing, and receipts.
  • Ask what is excluded: site tickets, tips, cameras, special tombs, boat permits, national-park fees, equipment, insurance, and hotel pickup outside the usual area.
  • Keep screenshots, names, licence/company details, and any complaint or escalation path.

Activity credentials

Activities need extra checks

  • Diving, snorkeling, desert, wildlife, balloon, mountain, and protected-area activities need operator credentials, insurance questions, equipment condition, emergency plan, weather cancellation, and pickup clarity.
  • Responsible animal and wildlife considerations include avoiding coercive animal encounters, reef damage, feeding wildlife, harassment, or access that violates protected-area rules.
  • Do not treat a cheaper quote as comparable until the inclusions and safety responsibilities match.
